About Akron
Akron, Ohio is the county seat of Summit County. It is on the banks of the Cuyahoga River in northeastern Ohio. The city was founded in 1825 and incorporated as a village in 1835. It became a city in 1865. The rubber industry was responsible for transforming Akron into a city. The city greatly expanded during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It became known as the “Rubber Capital of the World”. Akron has since branched out to include financial, research and high tech industries.
Akron has attractions and activities that will please people with a variety of tastes. These include places for sightseeing and venues for cultural activities. One of the city’s local attractions is the Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens. This is a National Historical Landmark. The house has 65 rooms and is open to the public for tours. Tours of the gardens on the property are also available. The National Inventors Hall of Fame is also in Akron.
Portage Lakes State Park is located on the south side of Akron. The park has a campground and picnic areas. Visitors can fish and swim in the water, and there are trails for hiking.
Two nationally known events held annually in Akron are the National Hamburger Festival and the All-American Soapbox Derby.
Akron is also home to the University of Akron. Performances at the university are open to Akron residents. University Park, the neighborhood adjacent to the university, is in the process of being revitalized.
The Akron Symphony Orchestra is located in Akron. The orchestra’s Classics Series attracts nationally known musicians.
The Akron zoo has over 700 animals. Zoo visitors can view see the Legends of the Wild exhibit and visit the Komodo Kingdom Education Center
